Exciting Racing On First Day At 2007 Melges 17 Midwinter Championship

9 March 2007

09 MARCH 2007 ? The first day of racing at the 2007 Melges 17 Midwinter Championship at the Lake Eustis Sailing Club in Eustis, Florida was nothing short of exciting. The breeze was pretty light so the one and only race of the day commenced late, around three o'clock in the afternoon. The breeze built to around 4-6 knots, just enough to get things going.

Mary Anne Ward came on strong right from the very beginning with a clean start and clearly out front early as she led the fleet around the weathermark in first. 2006 Midwinter Champions Brian McMurray and his wife Deb were in their element as they rounded a close second. Things got interesting at the first leeward gate as the breeze shifted 180 degrees. Still in the game Ward struggled to hang on to the lead as Bill Wiggins and his wife Angie found themselves passing through the gate first. Ward got back in the game, or so she thought enough to take the win. Coming in from left field was Andy and Iggy Labanauskas from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin storming the finish line grabbing the only bullet to be had for the day. Ward came in second, the McMurray's had a satisfying third place finish and in fourth was Bill Fauntleroy with steady crew Tommy Clough.

Racing resumes tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. sharp!
