Iggy & Andy Labanauskas Win 2006 Melges 17 Fall Championship

24 October 2006

22 OCTOBER 2006 ? Iggy Labanauskas with his brother Andy as crew won the 2006 Fall Championships in a seemingly dominant style by winning 4 out of the five races sailed. This year?s event was held on beautiful Lake Wylie along the North Carolina/South Carolina border, just south of Charlotte, NC.

Racing began Saturday morning with a stiff north breeze which gave the 17?s a great chance to show off their outstanding speed upwind and down. In the first two races, no one-boat led any two-marks consecutively. However, Iggy and Andy seemed to pull off the win both races as well as two other races.

Bill & Angie Wiggins were able to keep the brothers in check for most of the day. After a full-leg jibing duel down the last leg, Bill & Angie were able to pass the young guns to win race four by only a boat length.

Sunday?s races were postponed and eventually called due to no wind. Once the boats were all packed up, a few of the M17 crews reconvened at the local Indoor Karting Track for a slightly different sort of racing. Andy Labanauskas seemed to be the fastest of the group with Bill and Iggy right behind him. Larry and Colleen Brand were also amongst the four wheeled contest and are also pretty fast when the competition is on. Is this a new tradition for the 17 class?
