Iggy Labanauskas Is 2007 Melges 17 National Champion

26 August 2007

26 AUGUST 2007 ? Congratulations are in order for 2007 Melges 17 National Champion Iggy Labanauskas from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Labanauskas and his crew of Andy Burdick delivered an amazing performance at the regatta hosted by Crystal Lake Yacht Club. The 2007 M17 National Rankings were also decided at the event as Labanauskas takes this title home too including the perputual Larry Brand Memorial Ranking trophy for winning the series.

"I was really geared up for the Larry Brand Trophy," commented Labanauskas. "I came here thinking that if I win the Nationals great, but I really wanted to win the Larry Brand Trophy. I really have to thank my brother for sailing with me all this season at the past events. I also want to thank Andy for reeling me back in to the boat. I haven't really sailed the boat this summer so, I had to get back on track. Andy did that during the first two races yesterday."

With very light air prevailing, the race committee fired off race seven this morning at about half past nine. Again the first race was another display of Labanauskas' ability to power drive the Melges 17 as he commanded the fleet early on. Hans Meyers and Rob Terry from Flushing, Michigan were in full chase by the last gate of the race. Downwind Terry took to the left and got the upperhand. While Labanauskas, Mary Anne Ward from Cocoa Beach, Florida and second overall place Art Brereton from Chicago, Illinois were duking it out on the right, Terry slipped in for the finish. Ward outdone the competition snagging second right at the line, Brereton settled for third place and Labanauskas' best earned him a fourth.

With Brereton trailing Labanauskas by seven points, race two got underway around 10:30 a.m. At the first start the fleet was on edge resulting in a general recall. The next start was clean with a couple of exceptions. Brereton headed left as did Terry. With the fleet preference split down the center, the left looked promising as the wind increased a knot or two and Brereton appeared to pick up speed. Brereton was first at the mark followed by Terry, then Meyers. The rest of the fleet rounded in the painfully light air. At one point several teams took the spinnakers down on the first run as the air disappeared. Brereton rounded the mark in first, Meyers in second and in from the left, Kirk Donaldson from Whitmore Lake, Michigan in third. With a course change of 170 degrees due to the major wind shift, the top three managed to pick-up some speed, the rest of the fleet were not so lucky. The movement of the fleet was slow and frustrating. Upwind though Meyers edged out Brereton and took the lead. Again things downwind were practically at a standstill. Shortly thereafter, the race was abandoned.

A special thank you to PRO Mike Terry and his awesome race committee; to the Crystal Lake Yacht Club for an amazing weekend and warm hospitality; and most especially to all the competitors who travelled so far to compete.
