2007 Melges 17 U.S. National Championship Preview

21 August 2007

21 AUGUST 2007 ? The 2007 Melges 17 U.S. National Championship will be held this coming weekend, August 25-26 and hosted by the Crystal Lake Yacht Club in Frankfort, Michigan. Twenty-five Melges 17s have pre-registered for the event, with at least another five to ten expected to attend. Should more than thirty yachts participate this will be a record breaking event.

The event is being sponsored by MELGES PERFORMANCE SAILBOATS, NORTH SAILS, QUANTUM SAILS, WEST MARINE, HARKEN, LATIS YACHTING SOLUTIONS and CASS COMMUNICATIONS.

Of the pre-registered entrants, their origins span nine states including Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, South Carolina and Wisconsin. Returning to the stage in 2007 is back-to-back, double Melges 17 U.S. National Champion (2005, 2006) Art Brereton with Harry Melges as crew. The intense competitive regulars will also be on hand ? the legendary Gordy Bowers, Kirk Donaldson, Bill Fauntleroy, 2007 W.M.Y.A. Champion Brian McMurray and his wife Deb, Mary Anne Ward and Bill Wiggins.

Two days of fun, fast racing is scheduled to begin on Saturday and continues through until Sunday. Friday is reserved for practice racing, registration in the afternoon and a welcome social will follow that evening at the club. Saturday night will deliver a fantastic dinner and a live band for what will make a really fun party. Sunday the awards ceremony will take place. Not only will the National Championship title be awarded, the National Ranking and Larry Brand Memorial Series trophy will be presented to the yacht with the highest accumulated points based on the attendance and results from a specific 2007 series of events.

At this time, National Ranking Series leader Iggy Labanauskas from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is not on the roster to defend his charge. He is an amazing forty-three points ahead of second place Wiggins. McMurray is in third, Ward in fourth and Fauntleroy in fifth. Only nine points separate these racers.
