Pewaukee Proudly Hosts Inaugural Melges 17 Champs

24 July 2007

24 JULY 2007 ? Article as published by Scowlines ? Labanauskas and Trophies Take Top Billing ? Andy Labanauskas and Harry Melges were champions with a 1-1-1-1. They along with Mary Anne Ward/Peter Keck and August Barkow/Sue Sullivan are the first recipients of the new line of ILYA trophies. The photos do not do justice to the beauty and craftsmanship so Scowlines has decided to let you view them at the Big Inland site.

Pewaukee and Lexus of Brookfield magnanimously donated artistic examples of fine workmanship for the first Melges 17 Championship of the ILYA. Coleman Norris visited "the vaults" and selected an armada plate which is a reproduction of a design discovered on a retrieved vessel from the 1500s. The magnificent silver piece is finely etched with a Melges 17 with Pewaukee set in the background. Rick Buckley then crafted a base and support piece to complete the piece. Lexus of Brookfield donated a larger version of the ILYA trophies with a three-dimensional stunning replication of Melges 17 set in glass. The lighted base illuminated the fine detail of a full Melges 17 spinnaker.

This event is not about the trophies but the twenty-two boats from California, South Carolina, Florida, Michigan and Wisconsin were obviously enjoying Pewaukee hospitality which was evident at the trophy presentation. Chairpersons "Dex" and Tammy Sawyer pulled out all the stops including a blue carpet with cleanup boy Andy Burdick preparing the sailors for the processional (with music) to the trophy altar. The spirit was contagious as the crowd congratulated itself on a successful first event. Awards for the 17th registrant, 17th finisher and the participant with 17 points added to the hoopla. Melges Performance Sailboats donated the band on Saturday night for a rousing good time.

Sailing World's Dave Powlison was in attendance as both competitor and reporter. The fleet elected Bill Fauntleroy as fleet rep who will serve on the ILYA Board of Directors. The fleet will host a Championship event next year but preliminarily has chosen to delay initiation of the traditional invite-champs format.

PRO Bill Dale and his capable Pewaukee crew completed four races on Saturday with a Sunday no-wind day planned to allow the sailors recuperation time from a marvelous event.

The ILYA thanked Pewaukee for its implementation of the inaugural event and presented them with an embroidered ILYA pennant marking the hosting of the event.
