Coberly Wins Grand Rapid Sprints
2 July 2013
Article courtesy of Jason Lovell - Grand Rapids Yacht Club (GRYC) hosted a great regatta despite a lower turnout than expected. On Sunday, the breeze was ON and the "Grand Rapids Sprints" lived up to the name providing everyone with some very exciting racing. The crew work had to be good to quickly get around the marks and you also had to be on target with the ever changing wind shifts and finding the big puffs. On Sunday before noon, the fleet was able to get in five great races making the regatta an eight race series and, making up for light winds on Saturday.
In the end, Chad Coberly and Isaac Kremers had a very solid first place. Following Chad was Bob Heathcote with his import crew from Texas - Geoff Nelson. Young Geoff and his friend Paul Miller were up from Texas doing the Butterfly Single Handed Nationals and Geoff finished in 2nd place over all in that regatta. While in Michigan, they wanted to do some more racing so we found a spot for both of them on a Melges 17 for the GRYC Sprints.
In third, two points behind Bob, was Jason Lovell with Paul Miller as his crew from Texas. In the breeze, Jason and Paul were fast with a 1, 2 in the last two races. However they could not make up from Saturday and gain enough points to move into second. It was some great racing for all. Bob Heathcote said: “Awesome job, everyone involved with the regatta!! Definitely a class act. Everyone that didn’t show missed a great weekend”.
See you at the next regatta!
