Melges 17 Fleet Scores Big At Crystal Lake's Blue Water Regatta

20 June 2007

20 JUNE 2007 ? Once again the Melges 17 did not fail to impress this past weekend at the site of the upcoming 2007 National Championship ? Crystal Lake Yacht Club in Crystal Lake, Michigan!

The Blue Water Regatta was a true success as thirteen Melges 17s rocked the course, banging out seven races over two days ? man, this boat is fast!

On Saturday, the fleet managed five races ? three back-to-back in the morning with the wind kicking around 12-18. The wind was up and the competition was on. Half the fleet went to shore and made out well at the weathermark. Mary Anne Ward and Ken Wruk battled it out to the top. Downwind the shore side was not the place to be, so those that when to the middle benefited from the big puffs. Wruk tipped at the leeward mark resulting in a major setback. Rob Terry chartered Ted Greene's Melges 17 entitled 'Thrill Seeker' and simply blew the competition away, got ahead and won the first race.

It was rolling starts for races two and three. The boats were truly at their finest ? super fast downwind!

In the afternoon the air shifted for the last two races of the day with Bob Wynkoop alongside of Kirk Donaldson and his son Ian battling it out steady. Keith Brand got a jump on the fleet ? lovin' the light air and taking a bullet in the fourth race. Bill Fauntleroy took the bullet in race five!

Sunday produced very challenging, light air races for the fleet but that did little to stop Terry's competitive rampage. The wind was an unusual easterly, huge oscalation with the gun going off at 0930 sharp!. Terry, an experienced E-Scow and MC Scow sailor, Rob's outstanding performance of 1-2-1-5-2-2 (last race was a 6th, yet a throwout) granted him an eleven point lead and nailed the overall win. Not bad for his first time out sailing a Melges 17!

The sensational Mary Anne Ward was the next closest competition to Terry as she grabbed second. Next in line, third overall was none other that Bill Fauntleroy. Kirk and his son Ian Donaldson were fourth and Ried Munroe rounded out the top five.

The Melges 17s squeezed everything out of Crystal Lake! All seven races were conducted per the NOR... Also on hand, for the first time in the actual public eye was the Larry Brand Memorial Trophy. (See inset)

During the course of the weekend, in addition to the great racing, great parties were also in full swing as Regatta Chair, Bob Wynkoop and his Crystal Lake team of pranksters were out in full force naming boats that traveled with out ? Bill Fauntleroy's Melges 17 earned the name 'Loafers' on account of the black loafers that he wore the entire time at Midwinters due to forgetting to pack sailing shoes!
