Art Brereton Wins The 2008 Melges 17 Spring Championship

11 May 2008

Despite trivial weather conditions prevailing the Midwest area, the Melges 17 Spring Championship got underway in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin at the Lake Geneva Yacht Club on Friday, 9 May. Sixteen Melges 17s traveled many miles to join in on the fun!

Warm-ups, practice, parties and competitive racing was among the highlighted schedule of events, but making this regatta more than just a major was the valuable on the water coaching and evening feedback discussion opportunities planned each day after racing.

On Saturday, the fleet enjoyed five races with Art Brereton proving that he hasn't lost his knack for success on beautiful Lake Geneva. Brereton's almost perfect scoreline — 1,1,1,4,1 made for a dominating performance. Proving that consistency pays off in the long run was none-other that one of a few lady helmswomen in the class — Mary Anne Ward placing second overall, with the youthful Coye Harrett making a nice go of the fleet finishing third.

With more bad weather predicted on Sunday, racing was canceled and the fleet left the Saturday results in place as the final.
